The shift
Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the work of making a website useful enough for AI search systems to select, summarize, and cite. For contractors, it combines traditional local SEO with structured answers, verifiable business information, and pages built around the questions homeowners actually ask.
A Google AI Overview is an AI-generated response that can appear above ordinary organic listings. It does not replace search results on every query, but it changes the path to a contractor when it does: a homeowner may see an explanation, a service process, or named businesses before they reach the blue links. In Ahrefs’ analysis of 146 million Google SERPs, AI Overviews appeared on 20.5% of results, with much higher rates for “reason” queries such as “why is my AC not cooling?”
GEO does not replace local SEO. It makes local SEO more usable in an answer-driven result: a complete Google Business Profile, accurate services and locations, well-structured service pages, first-hand proof, and short answers that resolve one clear question. The practical test is simple: if an AI system pulls one paragraph from your site, does that paragraph identify the service, place, conditions, proof, and next step without guessing? See Map Pack Engineering and Service & City Architecture.
Aquacade Pools had 15 years of operating history, five-star reviews, and zero AI search presence when a homeowner mentioned that ChatGPT had recommended a competitor. Homerankr rebuilt the pages AI systems needed to understand: clear service answers, structured process content, and location-specific proof.
Problem
Aquacade Pools had strong real-world proof but no pages built for answer extraction. Their service information was fragmented, their FAQ coverage was thin, and AI search systems had little structured context to cite.
What we did
Added FAQPage markup to 12 service and city pages, placed direct answer blocks above the fold, added HowTo markup to the pool-installation process, and seeded Google Business Profile Q&A around 10 recurring homeowner questions.
Result
The business began appearing in Google AI Overviews for pool-builder searches in Nassau County within 60 days. Perplexity cited Aquacade for three target queries within 90 days, while early-season consultation requests tripled.

The work
AI search systems need an answer they can parse, a source they can trust, and details they can connect to a real local business. Homerankr applies those requirements across service pages instead of treating one blog post as the whole strategy.
how AI extracts content
Each service page begins with a direct answer below the H2 that mirrors the question in the heading. The first 50 words should identify the service, the location or service area when relevant, the main condition, and the practical answer — before the page expands into details.
Pattern: Question heading → 50-word answer → evidence → next step
on every service page
FAQPage markup helps describe the questions and answers already visible on a service page. It is not a shortcut to an AI Overview; it is structured context that reduces ambiguity around emergency, cost, process, and comparison questions.

HowTo markup fits process-led content such as preparing for a roof inspection, choosing a replacement system, or understanding a pool-installation timeline. It gives a search engine a clear sequence where the page genuinely provides one.

AI visibility is query-specific, so tracking needs to be query-specific too. Each month, compare target searches in a clean browser session, record whether an AI Overview appears, which domains it cites, what it says about the business, and what content gap remains.
Track: prompt → appearance → citation → competitor → content gap
Not the same thing
Traditional SEO aims to rank pages. Featured snippet work aims to win one excerpt. AI Overview optimization aims to make a contractor’s information eligible to be synthesized with other sources, which requires clear answers plus enough local proof for the system to trust the business behind them.
| What changes | Traditional local SEO | Featured snippet optimization | AI Overview / GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary outcome | Organic rankings and qualified visits | A highlighted answer from one page | Citation or inclusion within an AI-generated answer |
| Core unit of work | Service pages, location pages, links, profiles | One concise answer targeting one query | Direct-answer blocks, entity clarity, structured content, and verified local proof |
| Local proof | Important | Often secondary | Central when the answer involves a business recommendation |
| Content format | Comprehensive and useful | Brief, exact, extractable | Brief answer first, then evidence, process, and source clarity |
| Measurement | Rankings, calls, forms, Maps visibility | Snippet ownership and click-through | AI Overview presence, cited domains, answer accuracy, and assisted leads |
The relationship between classic rankings and AI citations is real, but it is no longer one-to-one. Ahrefs reported in 2025 that 76.1% of AI Overview-cited pages ranked in Google’s top 10; its 2026 follow-up found only 38% of citations came from top-10 pages. For contractors, the practical implication is not to abandon rankings — it is to stop assuming rankings alone make a business citation-ready.
A featured snippet can pull a definition from a single page. An AI Overview can synthesize several sources, include local information, and surface a business only when its service, geography, reputation, and relevance make sense together. That is why a contractor needs more than a well-written paragraph: the surrounding site and Google Business Profile have to support it.
Deliverables
The work is applied across the pages homeowners and AI systems rely on most: service pages, city pages, process content, and local business information.
Five to eight targeted questions per service page covering emergency, cost, process, and comparison intent in visible, structured JSON-LD.
Every priority service page gets a direct answer below the first relevant H2, written to resolve the implied question before the detail begins.
Process-based markup for genuine task and decision content, including inspection preparation, replacement steps, and installation timelines.
Eight to twelve common homeowner questions prepared for your Google Business Profile to clarify services, service areas, response times, and qualifications.
Clean-session checks of target searches, captured with citation evidence, cited competitors, answer language, and the next content opportunity.
A monthly view of which homeowner questions your pages cover, which queries cite competitors, and where the site needs additional proof.
Part of the system
Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini do not produce identical answers, but they reward the same foundation: accurate entities, useful local pages, clear claims, and evidence that holds up when a homeowner asks a specific question.
AI Overview Optimization handles the Google-generated answer layer. LLM Citation Building expands the same evidence into the sources and references answer engines may use when comparing or recommending local contractors. Both depend on the groundwork created by local SEO services for home contractors and service-and-city architecture.
Clear service and location pages create more valid opportunities for AI systems to connect a trade, a problem, and a service area.
Lever 04Citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity rely on related but separate source ecosystems. This lever extends the proof beyond Google.
